Singin’ the Winter Blues – Seasonal Depression

I live in the pacific northwest, along the coast. Anyone who lives along the northern west coast, whether it’s northern california, oregon, or washington can tell you: cloudy, rainy, depressing.

Many of us love a good sunny day, and tolerate the cloudy ones. But for some it goes it lot deeper. During the winter months, with less light, harsher weather that keeps them indoors, and shorter days, many find themselves affected to the point of debilitation. Seasonal Depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, can knock you down.

It’s is not just a depression problem, and is not a mental or emotional problem. S.A.D. or Seasonal Affective Disorder disrupts sleep patterns, energy levels, and mood. How do you cope with this seasonal disorder?

One common treatment is using therapeutic lights, or bright-light therapy. The idea is to spend a small portion of the day exposed to “bright light”, light that is stronger than typical interior light, or more like the intensity of a bright, sunny day. After a 20-30 minute exposure, whether it’s while eating breakfast, applying makeup (gives you great lighting!), or reading, preferably in the morning, the body clock is adjusted. This changes the production of melatonin in the body as well.

Bright light therapy is also used for treating jetlag through the same body clock adjustment. Seasonal depression does not have to spoil the season, but can be managed through bright light therapy, supplements like melatonin, and a healthy diet.

Talk with your health care provider to see if bright light therapy might be useful in treating your seasonal depression aka the winter blues. Don’t let S.A.D. leaving you feeling sad. If you have eye conditions talk with your eye care specialist before starting any light therapy. Therapeutic lights are specialty item, designed to provide intense light with little heat and low energy use. Check with your health care provider for recommendations, or your local health equipment store.
