Improve Gas Mileage With These Tips

America has been in love with cars since they first hit the road, but things changed a couple of years ago. Remember the day you went to the gas station to fill up and the price read $4.00 for a gallon of gas? I do and remember thinking wow.

Hybrids and alternative fuel vehicles have been all the rage since gas prices soared. Saving money at the pump may be out of your control, but there are things you can do on your end to make sure your get the most value out of every gallon of gas.

#1 Change your air filter on a regular bases — Your car has an internal combustion engine. That means the fuel mixed with air is what makes the engine work. If your air filter is clogged up you could be losing up to 10% of your fuel efficiency. Change the air filter a couple times a year. It is actually very easy and very inexpensive. It is seriously something you can do yourself, usually for under $10.

#2 You don’t need to floor it all the time — Seriously, you are not a NASCAR driver (well, you might be) you don’t need to put the pedal to the floor. Ease into it and you will definitely be a more efficient driver.

#3 Low speeds on the highway = better gas mileage — Use your cruise control if you have one. The more consistent you keep your speed, the better mileage you will get. It may not be fun, but it will keep money in your wallet.

#4 Service your car when the manual tells you to — I don’t know why people don’t do this. I mean, come on. It tells you right in the manual when you get the car serviced. Do it. Heck, so cars even have maintanace monitors that will flash and tell you when things need to be serviced. Listen to it.

#5 Turn off the Air Conditioner — While many newer cars have air conditioners that will recycle airs automatically through the cabins when it reaches a certain temperature, older vehicles will just continue pumping it out, wasting energy and fuel. If you can do with out it, do with out it.

Pick a few and implement them, and you will save money. Every little bit counts.
