Sydney’s Cafe Culture

The majority of tourists come to Sydney for the a glimpse of the bridge and the Opera House. Whilst you are here, you really should relax and watch the world go by in one of our delightful cafes.

Australia is actually well known for its exceptional coffee and the locals really do enjoy nothing better than having a late breakfast (brunch) on the weekend with at least a couple of cups of the cities finest coffee, whilst reading the local paper.

If you fancy blending in with the locals and enjoying one of the best cafes and breakfasts in town then head to the suburb of Balmain. Getting there is easy and picturesque as you can take the short ferry ride over to Balmain East from Circular Quay. Once you’ve made it up the big hill by foot or better still by bus, you will find Kazbah which is the best place for breakfast in Sydney and is located at 308 Darling Street.

This middle Eastern breakfast experience is not to be missed. Sure, you can still order the usual breakfast fare including toast, eggs and juices. But try something different like the breakfast tagine. Better still, get a group of 8 of you together and go for the degustation menu. At just $20 per head, it’s probably the best bargain in Sydney in terms of quality and amount of food. I’d strongly advise booking for this though.

If breakfast with a view is more your thing then there are plenty to choose from. A classic and an old favourite is Bathers Pavillion. It is a little on the expensive side with dishes starting at $20, but the views and proximity to the water make it worth the extra dollars.

Another great option is Bronte Beach. This is just a little further on from Bondi Beach and has a lovely strip of cafes with a view of the ocean. Getting here is relatively easy too as the 378 bus will bring you directly to Bronte beach. From here you can take the amazing coastal walk to Bondi and walk off your sumptuous breakfast.

Bill Granger, the famous Australian Chef, makes the best Scrambled Eggs in Sydney. You can enjoy them for yourself at one of his three cafes here in Sydney. Choose from Darlinghurst, Surry Hills or Woolhara.

For the coffee lovers, you’ll find an abundance of great coffee places. Many are nothing more than a whole in the wall but if there’s a buzz about the place, rest assured, the coffee is good. It is such a part of the culture here in Sydney that you can even attend a coffee course. Prices are around $150 for a three hour lesson and you can learn about coffee, the workings of the espresso machine and how to texturise the milk.

So, on your busy schedule to Sydney, find the time to relax and watch the world go by in one of Sydney’s great cafes.
