2012 is fast approaching and all the time more people are beginning to believe that something big will occur. There are the doomsday thinkers who say that it will be the end of the world, and there are those that believe 2012 will be the dawn of a new age of enlightenment. The amount of theories that are floating around get added to on an almost weekly basis. Some of the most common suggestions for 2012: earth changes, solar storms, galactic alignment, arrival of ET life forms, Planet x, as well as the end of the Earth.

1. Earth Changes: There has been a lot of discussion about the planetary wide changes that might happen in 2012. A common theme is that there could be a polar shift. This has actually happened in the Earth’s history, and there is some evidence to back up the claim.

There are scientists who say our planet had a pole shift event approximately 780, 000 years before. If this was to happen again then the results would be devastating on a massive scale. There would be the biggest ever earthquakes experienced by man, mega tsunamis, and the eruption of super volcanoes that would create nuclear winters.

2. Galactic Alignment: Every planet, star, and heavenly body has cycles. On Earth we are all aware of the solstices that occur on June 21 and December 21, as well as the equinoxes twice a year on March 21 and September 21. These are calculated by the Earth’s movement around the sun. It is important to understand that our solar system is also moving in a cycle through the galaxy.

It is believed that in 2012, and specifically on the Northern Hemisphere’s winter solstice (Dec 21), our Solar System will be exactly aligned with the galaxy’s centre or equinox point. This cycle lasts for 25, 800 years. The results of being aligned in this manner are difficult to quantify, we can only speculate. It is believed that the Galactic Equinox has relevance to the end of the Mayan long count calendar.

3. Massive Solar Storms: Our sun is an incredibly active star. It constantly gives off flares some of which are powerful enough to cause disruption to the electro magnetic fields on our planet. NASA is predicting that there will be a strong solar maximum event that is likely to occur around the year 2012. This may result in massive failures to all forms of modern communication as satellites and power grids can be knocked out of service.

4. Planet X: There is a theory that is now widespread that during 2012 the Earth will be in close proximity or collision with an unknown planet that has been referred to as Planet X or Niburu. It is said that this planet or brown dwarf is on an elliptical orbit that only brings it close to our planet once every six thousand years. People who believe in this theory back it up with text and tablets from the ancient Sumerian culture that thrived five thousand years ago. If this was to occur than the results are almost impossible to imagine.

5. Extra Terrestrial Contact: There are a minority of individuals that have suggested that 2012 is when we humans will make our first contact with life that was not born here on Earth.
