All In Favor, Say ‘Aye’

Sounds like a dialog out of a pirate movie, ‘All in favor, say Aye’. “All the attendee’s waited impatiently for the next vote to be cast, carefully scanning the room for a hint of dissension, ready to spring into action, thrashing and fighting for their own survival. The votes were made known, one by one, and eyes narrowed as the final vote brought about a unanimous decision. Ah, yes, the voice may speak of commitment and agreement, but the gut feeling knows the truth. It is only a matter of time till the mind can no longer mask the disaccord, and the true nature shows through.”

Finding harmony and agreement within ourselves is much like that voting session. Every part of us has its own agenda, like it or not. This is not a bad thing in any sense, in fact let’s take a look at a few agenda’s to dispel any misunderstanding:

  • Spirit: experience!
  • Body: be safe, comfortable
  • Emotions: alert of possible situations
  • Mind: keep alive, based on what the mind has learned
  • Memory: remind us how painful or pleasant ‘it’ felt in the past
  • Heart: connect with self and others
  • This list goes on, but this gives us a basic idea. We could be walking down the street, minding our own business, and it starts to rain. Each person will react differently, based on their past, their information, goals, perceptions, self image, persona, and a whole cornucopia of stored data. One person will run for cover, angry that this downpour is destroying their hairstyle. Another is afraid of being splashed by passing vehicle, after all, it’s happened before! Another says ‘oh well’, for it’s only water and clothes will dry. Yet another stops, feeling the rain on their face, taking in the experience. Most of these responses is driven by personal agenda, and the strongest response usually gets their way. This automated response system works, though it is a bit robotic in nature.

What about those times when you want something new? How do you step into a new experience, or a new relationship, or a new way of thinking? This question, conscious or not, is one that arises for many of us. We step into that new situation, and we respond in a way that is comfortable to us, or has a proven track record. The biggest, fastest, and strongest do win, more often than not. How then do you get past the stronger response, the ‘practical’ side, and listen to your heart, or your true nature?

“As the others argued vehemently, trying to gain control of the situation, a quiet figure in the back of the room arose. Their presence was commanding, and their silence spoke louder than any other voice. A hush quickly spread across the room.”

What part of you has that ‘commanding presence’? No, it’s not the loudest voice, though they often win. Finding the easy way to happiness can sometimes be just a matter of creating a little dialog between all the interested parties. Sometimes we need to give one aspect of ourselves a little leeway, even if its not our usual approach. That voice within us that’s always pushed aside isn’t necessarily going to start from a state of trust, but when we recognize and listen we do build a bridge within ourselves. Our forward movement then becomes more of a cooperative effort.

Though they all thought only of their own best interest, they stood in silence, waiting for the words they knew were forthcoming; they knew the vision would lead them to a place beyond their wildest dreams”.

This is the easy way to happiness, finding that balance that gives us inner harmony.
